Background of the study

Viral social media trends have a profound impact on language, particularly in shaping morphological innovations. In Nigeria, hashtag neologisms have emerged as a key feature of viral digital culture, reflecting socio-political dynamics and creative expression. These trends often involve the rapid creation and widespread dissemination of new lexical items that deviate from standard morphological patterns. Hashtag neologisms are formed through the creative blending of words and symbols, often influenced by current events and popular culture (Adeniyi, 2023). This phenomenon not only demonstrates the adaptability of Nigerian language but also highlights the role of social media in accelerating linguistic change. The study examines the morphological transformations induced by viral hashtag trends, comparing these digital innovations with traditional word formation processes (Ibrahim, 2024). By exploring the mechanisms behind these changes, the research aims to develop models of digital morphological evolution that account for the unique pressures and opportunities presented by viral social media.

Statement of the problem

Although viral hashtag trends significantly influence Nigerian morphology, there is limited research on the specific morphological innovations they drive. Existing studies often focus on the socio-political impact of hashtags rather than the detailed linguistic processes of neologism formation. This gap restricts our understanding of how viral trends reshape word structures and challenges traditional morphological models. Without systematic analysis, educators and linguists are unable to effectively address the rapid lexical changes occurring in digital spaces (Chinwe, 2023).

Objectives of the study

1. To document morphological changes induced by viral hashtag trends.

2. To compare digital neologism formation with traditional word formation processes.

3. To develop models explaining digital morphological evolution.

Research questions

1. How do viral hashtag trends influence morphological patterns in Nigerian language?

2. What processes drive the formation of hashtag neologisms?

3. How do these innovations compare with traditional morphological forms?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it investigates the impact of viral social media trends on Nigerian morphology, offering insights into digital lexical innovation. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and provide practical guidance for language education and policy in the digital era (Adeniyi, 2023; Obi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing hashtag neologisms on Nigerian social media and does not include offline language or other digital phenomena.

Definitions of terms

• Morphology: The study of word structure and formation.

• Hashtag Neologism: A new word or expression created through hashtag use.

• Viral Trend: A rapidly spreading phenomenon on social media.
